Aprender en red para crear una biblioteca digital

Deal 6 al 9 de Mayo se realizó la reunión internacional del proyecto Dean correspondiente a la última fase del proyecto con la presentación del producto final que fue la creación de una biblioteca digital piloto creada por estudiantes de 4º de ESO del Instituto Avda. de los Toreros y marqués de Suanzes de Madrid.

Se trata de un proyecto europeo Leonardo. Estos proyectos promovidos por la UE, fomentan la formación de consorcios o agrupaciones de diversas instituciones públicas o privadas, orientadas a actividades relativas a la educación y a la formación. La finalidad de los proyectos Leonardo, es experimentar con nuevas formas de aprendizaje en las que se tenga principalmente en cuenta la cooperación internacional, la utilización de las nuevas tecnologías, el mejoramiento de la presentación y calidad de la formación, los métodos pedagógicos dirigidos a la integración en la sociedad del conocimiento en la que van a vivir nuestros actuales escolares y la transferencia de buenas prácticas a otros sectores y áreas de los resultados obtenidos.

En nuestro caso, el consorcio está formado por tres instituciones, (una en cada uno de los países de España, Grecia y Turquía), con el objetivo de desarrollar el proyecto DEAN «Digital Edition, Apprenticeship and Network,» consistente en la experimentación de métodos de aprendizaje en red para adquirir las técnicas de digitalización de textos y de edición electrónica con vistas a conocer cómo se hacen las bibliotecas digitales.

En cada uno de los países mencionados colaboran otras instituciones que son las beneficiarias de la experimentación realizada. De esta manera se construye una red internacional que permite estudiar la forma de trabajar cooperativamente en un ámbito europeo para alcanzar un objetivo común.

El consorcio DEAN, lo conforman tres nodos internacionales: Aldesoc, Madrid, España; Union of scientists and informatics of Viotia, Levadia; Grecia; y Dokuz Eylul University, Izmir, Turquía. Y los nodos asociados colaboradores siguientes: en España los IES's Avda de los Toreros y Marqués de Suanzes; en Grecia los nodos asociados son: 4º Gymnasium de Levadia y el Centro docente de Estonia; y en Turquía los nodos son: Grupo de estudiantes universitarios de Izmir y dos sub-nodos que son los centros docentes coordinados por Simge Akpullukçu y Efe Glüçüer.

Además, en su momento Aldesoc entró en contacto con dos posibles nodos colaboradores en Colombia: IES Santa Isabel de Hungría y Proyecto Poeta patrocinados por la importante Fundación Carvajal, sita en Cali. Desafortunadamente no fue posible avanzar en esta integración, pero esperamos que en un futuro próximo iniciativas extra-comunitarias puedan integrarse en proyectos europeos, como se posibilita en los Leonardo.

Después de establecida esta estructura de cooperación transnacional, propusimos como materia del proyecto la elaboración de un producto inmaterial que subrayara la importancia del conocimiento «elemento básico de la nueva sociedad», se utilizaran las nuevas tecnologías de la información, y se reflexionara sobre el impacto social de esta actividad en la formación de la nueva sociedad emergente. En nuestro caso el producto inmaterial propuesto, fue la elaboración de una biblioteca digital piloto.

Pero no se trataba solo de la obtención de un producto, sino principalmente de experimentar con una pedagogía apoyada en dos conceptos: «aprender haciendo» y «aprender cooperativamente».

En el primer concepto, aprender haciendo, interesa observar cómo el hecho de fijar un objetivo, y obtener un producto, aumenta el interés y la motivación de los estudiantes al percibir la finalidad de su esfuerzo y también observar cómo se aprende a integrar la practica con la teoría en la formación de conocimiento.

En el segundo concepto, aprender cooperativamente, interesa observar cómo el aprendizaje puede altamente reforzarse cuando se trabaja en grupo, en equipo, en el que cada uno ayuda a los otros a hacer su tarea, y cómo la colaboración en un ambiente amable puede ser mas eficaz que la competencia que significa lucha y aislamiento.

Conceptos que aplicamos a la elaboración de la propuesta biblioteca digital piloto, atendiendo a los siguientes puntos:

Contestar a las preguntas ¿Qué es una biblioteca digital? ¿Qué libros seleccionar? ¿Cual es su uso social?. Estudiar las técnicas a utilizar relativas a la captura de imágenes, digitalización, de edición digital, descripción cátalográfica; Estudiar y hacer la integración de los libros digitales en la biblioteca digital, y de los métodos de búsqueda. También para permitir la cooperación educativa, local e internacional, había que conocer las técnicas para la formación de redes de comunicación digital, así como los medios informáticos (hardware y software) necesarios para llevar a efecto el proyecto. Además se planteo la necesidad de reforzar el estudio del ingles como lenguaje común de comunicación.

Aunque en la próxima sesión informaremos de nuestras tareas a lo largo de los dos años, anticiparemos ahora algunos resultados y conclusiones.

El resultado material de la experiencia llevada a cabo con el proyecto DEAN ha sido la construcción de una biblioteca digital piloto, pero el resultado pedagógico del proyecto, nos ha permitido observar la idoneidad de un aprendizaje centrado en el alumno y en la cooperación entre ellos, y la eficacia de esta forma de aprender y de educación que desempeñará un importante rol en la cambiante sociedad en la que han de vivir nuestros escolares.

Esta experiencia ha mostrado cómo con la estructura de red de cooperación educativa y con la metodología de “aprender haciendo” los aprendices han adquirido destrezas y habilidades que han provocado un revulsivo en su manera de acercarse al conocimiento, y en la autoestima y revalorización de sí mismos adoptando una actitud de confianza y de coraje; han comprobado que ellos mismos son los dueños de lo que aprenden,

También se ha observado cómo gracias al desarrollado de un espíritu cooperativo y solidario, los aprendices han vencido el temor a cometer errores y a preguntar lo que no saben para superarlos y que el trabajo cooperativo y compartido, hecho en común, forme parte de su propio conocimiento, y que el trabajo de cada uno sea valorado y estimado por los otros.

No debemos olvidar en todo esto la importancia de las Tecnologías de la Información. Gracias a ellas ha sido posible formar e integrar la red DEAN, se han podido utilizar la computadora como herramienta poderosa para el aprendizaje y para la construcción de las redes telemáticas, así como a contar con eficientes programas informáticos, de fácil aprendizaje, que facilitan salvar las diferencias de niveles de equiparación entre los distintas procedencias y bagaje educativo de los aprendices, lo que no hubiera sido posible sin la ayuda del ordenador. Esto significa darle un mayor capacidad de empoderamiento a los aprendices.

La experiencia con el proyecto DEAN ha mostrado igualmente que los profesores y administradores de la educación, aún no llegan a percibir toda la importancia de lo que suponen las nuevas tecnologías para facilitar el aprendizaje y para acceder al conocimiento. Y esto se observa cuando muy a menudo encontramos que el ordenador es utilizado para conducir al aprendiz paso a paso a través del proceso de aprendizaje.

La presencia del profesor en esta nueva era de aprendizaje va a ser, tal vez, mucho mas importante que antes. Pero la importancia del papel del profesor, creemos, será muy diferente al actual, pasando de ejercer una enseñanza pasiva, a convertirse en un dinamizador que motive al aprendizaje activo, que facilite el acceso a la información, y con ello se incremente el interés y el entusiasmo por el conocimiento científico y artístico. Y este punto álgido, el dilema, entre los distintos tipos de teorías sobre educación: empoderamiento y la libertad del escolar contra la rígida instrucción y el rol pasivo de ser instruido, lo irá resolviendo el empleo de nuevos métodos pedagógicos apoyados y facilitados por la tecnología de la información.

Como decía el pedagogo americano Dewey: La educación no está en enseñar a vivir el futuro sino en vivir el futuro.

Next meeting of Dean's project in Madrid

We shall finish our project of DEAN( Digital edition, digital library and apprenticeship network) on the 7th May.

The project has reported a lot of experience in the education field. Undoubtly the new generation of younger has a lot to say in the forthcoming futre. Changes everywhere boost their lives with new ways of learning and new paths open towards a world which albeit unknown would bring happiness and freedom if the new environments are set for peace and social justice. The new society will be deemed by the actions of their younger.

Our project highlighted a new methodology called learning by doing as both individual and cooperative means of boosting courage and knowledge with the support of ICT tools changing radically the learning environments.

We shall have the results of our apprenticeship experience displayed during the next meeting of the project to be held in Madrid on the 7th May...

ETTB, Adult Education Centres, Bites-Centras) had participated in a project entitled ELBA (Electronic Book for Adults), herein presents a report for application to THE EAEA AWARD FOR ADULT LEARNING (Grundtvig Award) 2010.

Good morning dear colleagues and learners,

I'm very pleased to be with all of you in Levadia at this particular place as the School library of good memories for some of us to make these opening words. I would like to thank the Union organization for hosting all the DEAN project members during these 4 days meeting. There're almost 20 participants of three European countries here today. Particularly, I would like to welcome some young members, present today, apprentices of DEAN project, who are participating for their first time in an international meeting and in an European project as well. I'm sure their freshness and naivety will endorse the effectiveness of this meeting. DEAN, Digital Edition and Apprenticeship Network is an European Union LLP-LdV funded project which aims to create a cooperative learning network in order to build up a digital library with the help of ICT tools. In the project, a digital book database is developed for use as support to learn by doing and network training.

Cooperative learning network is the mainstream of modern Education in current emerging society. The rationale for cooperative educative network is a methodology based on the mathematical structure of nodes and networks applicable to teach and learn. Teaching and learning are thus reciprocal. Thus cooperative learning, is not just a mere methodology to apply in Education but an experimental methodology in a broaden sense applicable to all fields of society. I regard education as crucial. In the first place because education is the space where trainers, trainees, educators, parents, teachers, stakeholders, civil society converge, and in the second place to set education in the realm of novel human thinking, understanding and freedom for the knowledge society.

Cooperative learning is an apprenticeship structure, but our methodology of learning by doing needs, not only a structure, but also a goal to achieve and to learn how to do the necessary tasks to reach that goal. Learning by doing in Cooperative network seeks for implementation and completion. Digital library is our goal.

Digital Library is a representation of an universal access to human knowledge. As participants in active life and learning we should behave not as mere users of technology but as seekers for liberty, knowledge and culture. In this sense a digital library is far more than a simple goal or a computer tool for a cooperative learning network implementation basis.

Our work won't worth if we don't make our work accessible to others. So Dean attempts to build a private specific library providing the organization of the collection of books in some fields of education digitised by learners belonging to associate nodes, to the use of teachers and learners communities whose completion will likely be undertaken by others. In this way our endeavours will always worthwhile.

I very much hope that your participation in this meeting will be both beneficial and enjoyable. And particularly for those of you visiting Levadia and Greece for the first time, I trust your stay will be a pleasant one. It has been a great pleasure for me to be here again and I declare this meeting open. Many thanks.

Nos vamos a Grecia con el proyecto Dean

Tal como lo especifica Jean Piaget, aprender es una actividad permanente, realizada con un propósito y para un propósito. Sólo a través del compromiso entre el que aprende y su yo es que el conocimiento se abre paso en la mente y en el corazón del aprendiz.

El alumno se moviliza para un propósito. Ayudarle a encontrar el mejor camino de alcanzar su propósito es la misión del profesor. A través de la realización de proyectos en los que el alumno se vea feliz y motivado para su desarrollo, dentro de un ambiente de creación y de aprendizaje, es el camino que la educación deberá adoptar para que el aprendiz alcance el nivel de desarrollo de sus facultades intelectuales.

El aprendizaje en un entorno colaborativo, con los demás, es la forma que la educación deberá adoptar igualmente para el desarrollo de las cualidades del aprendiz y su empoderamiento personal. Sólo en la convicción de que el bien común de las civilizaciones es la educación del niño, la educación recuperará el espacio para el conocimiento y la cultura.

La próxima reunión del proyecto Dean (Digital Edition and Apprenticeship networking) dará cuenta del avance de la experiencia de "Aprender haciendo" apendizaje colaborativo, como la metodología para alcanzar un propósito: la creación y uso de una biblioteca digital de educación.

La reunión tendrá lugar en Levadia (Grecia) del 12 al 15 de Noviembre próximo. En esta reunión participarán formadores y aprendices socios del proyecto.

Digital Libraries and Cooperative Learning Networking:Experiences from DEAN Project

Abstract

DEAN, Digital Edition and Apprenticeship Networking, is an European Union LLP-LdV funded project which aims to create cooperative learning networking in order to build up a digital library with the help of ICT tools. In the project, a digital book database was developed for use as support to learn by doing and network training. The cooperative learning networking was shaped into the structure of an apprenticeship networking: 3 initial nodes was created at the beginning and called Dean Group (Spain, Greece and Turkey). Dean group will have other nodes connected to it. These were called associated nodes. Dean group achieved to form associated nodes. Each associated node had a coordinator and one monitor. As a result a collection of digitised books from 4 areas of the education field (theoretical and philosophical issues, methodologies, techniques and European policies) and added to other digitised books taken from existing digital libraries and collected by the associated nodes. The trend of the project towards the digital library drew the bigger efforts and interest on the part of the participants and have biased them against the cooperative learning networking. The creation of a digital library through the cooperative learning networking fostered independence and empowerment on the part of the teacher, learner and citizen.

2º Boletín del proyecto europeo Dean

Como resultado de la segunda reunión internacional del proyecto Dean, celebrada en Izmir (Turquía) en Intitute of Science Education, de la Universidad de Dokuz Eylul, en la que participaron representantes de España, Grecia y la propia Turquía, se ha editado el 2º número del boletín que refleja el avance y desarrollo del proyecto así como la aportación de distintos expertos en Bibliotecas digitales a la experiencia y conocimiento en bibliotecas digitales.

El método adoptado por los miembros del proyecto denominado cooperative learning network ha sido presentado en su estructura y organización por los socios del proyecto.

Hasta nuestra próxima reunión seguiremos trabajando con esta metodología con el fin de avanzar en la construcciòn de la biblioteca digital especializada que será el producto final del proyecto Dean.

En la ciudad de Izmir (Esmirna-Turquía) va a realizarse la 2ª reunión internacional del proyecto DEAN del 22 al 26 de Abril. Durante esta reunión se mostrarán los materiales con los que hemos trabajado durante los meses previos a la reunión y contará con la presencia de los miembros participantes de los 3 países (España, Grecia y Turquía). La actividad más interesante será informar sobre la creación de nodos que conformarán la red cooperativa de educación, metodología innovadora de aprendizaje que tendrá como producto final la creación de una biblioteca específica privada para educadores y aprendices.

Setting up the frame. The world critical situation. Education at stake.

Before I enter the subject of Dean project ( Digital Edition and Libraries in Apprenticeship networking) I would like to talk about visions, a word I borrowed from Papert, which I mean essential for the future of education, our project and our own lives likewise. What you may listen next is my strong conviction on what is a primary commitment to mainstream education. You all know we're getting through a worldwide critical situation right now. We even don't know how long it will last. It's touching and critical in all aspects of life. We doubt whether we're attending the end of an era, or facing something new, a new renaissance, a new era in history of mankind. We all agree by now that new technologies of communication and information have burst onto the economical, social, cultural, educational and labour world stage raising uncertainty, instability and distress but also a blow of HOPE and FREEDOM. Likewise we're aware this novel situation has arisen a voracious appetite for wealth on the side of the richest, and hunger, misery and desperation on the side of the poorest. This iniquity is leaving a gap between rich and poor which has become unsustainable though.

We stare at two ways: a descent into barbarism or a step forward in a new global social order. We should then choose. Never before than today's the conviction on the fact that only education will help us to overcome today's fated situation prevails. The quoted words, in 1931, from a well known scientist and epistemologist Jean Piaget are wit and sensible “Only education will likely be able to safeguard our societies from violent or sudden dissolution”

An appeal to vision

“What's common to all education systems is the child or learner himself or at least some characteristics of his psychology” Jean Piaget says.

Once we were children and adolescents. We had dreams. Further more at age of 4 we use to build our own world and live in it as an extension of the real one. We felt happy and unique. When we grew up and became adults we ceased to dream, and we became “real-istic”, conformist and socially and politically adapted to established social conditions. We accepted what we were given without inquiries or claims. Our dream for happiness had swept away.

Maybe you might be thinking why I'm telling all this. It's because within a critical situation as today's we should appeal to education for repair damage and wrong. We agree things are not right as they are. Learning conditions are inadequate. Environmental and educational learning &training conditions are currently wrong. We feel defeated and unhappy. Our trainees and students likewise.

There's an empty. There's a Need. As I mentioned education is relevant for our future. Education is moving to the centre stage of intellectual interests, research and study and political arena. New technologies have made it possible. The quoted words from Papert sound appropriated.

«The approach of 21st century has brought lots of pronouncements on the fact that Information society both requires and makes possible new forms of education. We agree totally with this. But when these pronouncements are tardy in translating them into reality it's often ascribed to a lack of money, technology, or teachers training. Actually there's a need for all these. But the prior lack is a shortage of courage, coherent, inspiring and yet realistic visions of what education could be like 10 or 20 years from now .

No one dares to talk about the future or if one does we're compelled to think of the present .Vision is not” a blue print but a compelling view of “look and feel” of the future-its needs, its opportunities and how we can prepare ourselves to act on them. Vision allows us to look beyond the problems that beset us, giving way to our passage into the future. Even more vision energizes this passage inspiring and guiding us into action. Envisioning the future drives us away from wasting resources vainly on trying to use new technologies to solve the problems of school-as it-is, instead of seeking radically new opportunities to develop school –as-it-can-be. The future is to match needs and opportunities -Papert»

Technologies burst onto the societal scenery

«New technologies propelled societies into action. Vision is a driving force.. Better test scores, Internet, computers in the classroom , more trained teachers. All these are fine and always useful things, of course. But these visions aren't of the same stuff as Martin Luther King's «I have a dream», Albert Einstein's intuition for his intuition on time and space which led to the invention of relativity theory”, Henry Ford's vision of a car everyone could afford to own.» « These are visions that inspired people to perform great deeds. Vision is the key of how policy makers and educators can participate in forging an education to match needs and opportunities of the new century»

«But vision is also the key to what this education should be. The primary commitment of education should be about vision. Every citizen should enter the world with:

1.- A proud vision of self as a powerful life-long learner.

2.- A vibrant vision of a worth-while life ahead.

3.- An optimistic vision of society to be proud of

4.- The skills and the ethic needed to follow these visions (Papert)

Information Society

I mentioned it above. We've got a powerful tool as the computer to help us to develop learners' potentialities. To empower the learner to reach further goals and achieve independence. We need to believe on child centred development instead of listening to those who in sharp opposition to the former believe in a more centred based- competence-curriculum approach. The child and development centred approach puts the accent on the individual development while the curriculum centred approach focuses on the information the individual will acquire. We strongly should align with the goal of education which fosters the independence and empowerment of the child, student and trainee.

Let's lead instead of being followers

The role of the computer has more to do with a greater sense of empowerment given to the child than to information. The current intended reform of education on the part of the educational establishment which is taking place in the EU is to strive for a competence based curriculum. The new educational policy shifted its education goal from education as personal development to competence- based- curriculum.

«These issues need to be deepen in educational theory and philosophy. The computers sharpens the arguments against or for in educational theory» But we're accountable to the individuals and citizens that we are growing up for the new society. We should then think and ask ourselves what kind of individuals and citizens de we want? Do we want empowered and independent people ready to take their own decisions and shape their own lives? Or do we prefer citizens who will accept the discipline of following the instructions and programmes that are set up for them by others?

Commitment of education

We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for ten or fifteen years, and come out at last with a belly-full of words and do not know a thing. The things taught in schools and colleges are not an education, but the means of education (Emerson)

¿It's a miracle that curiosity survives to programmed education (Einstein)

The word progress has no sense while unhappy children exist (Einstein)

A taught truth is just half a truth , while the whole truth should be reconquered, rebuilt or rediscovered by the learner himself (Jean Piaget)

One doesn't learn to experiment only by looking at the teacher or doing exercises already organized. Only one learns by doing , working actively, that's to say, freely and having all the time to do it. (J. Piaget)
